PostPosted: Sun Jan 06, 2008 1:20 am    Post subject: new at breeding! i need help!

hello, im new here and i have never breed kakarikis let alone birds before! however i do breed other animals (goats, cows, guinea pigs and puppys). I have had a female by herself for over a year now but i have just bought a male to keep her company ( other then the guinea pigs). i have been reading wat other people have written and asked and i was just wandering if anyone had some useful tips wich will help me with breeding them for the first time.

also i was wondering how high abouve the floor of the nesting box, should the door be?

also i noticed that my female (moa) still does not let the male near her or her food. could this be because i have had her by herself for so long? and do you think she will soon be nice?

thank you to anyone who answers!

Hi badcat,
I am relatively new to this as well, but can you provide some more info please about cage/aviary, (size, inside or out, nestbox )how long have they been together etc.
Have you had Moa as a companion bird for a year? Did you just put the cock in with the hen Does she chase the cock away or does she just ignore him. Are you sure he is a he?

Hi again,
reason i asked is because she may see you as her mate. I had an conure hen once who was a companion bird. I kept her with another bird - baraband - which she tolerated, but not when it came to me. She was imprinted more as a human than as a bird. When I tried to set het up in a breeding cage, she very much displayed the behaciour you describe. She did not care about the other bird at all

hi, umm, the avairy is about 2-3 metres and is square. um its outside and has one full wall protected and 2 walls 3/4 protected.
um my dad has made the nest box from scrach with only dimentions so we do not know if the opening where the kak can get through is to low.

i got moa and tiki about 3 years ago and i assumed they were both hens because i kept finding eggs that did not hatch and which appeared to have no baby inside. tiki died about a year and bit ago and moa just flew round the cage acting normal.
moa isnt really a companion although she is tame enough to feed by hand and appears to trust me. do you think her and tiki may have been a pair?

it has been a few days since i bought the cock. she chases him away from the food if she decides she wants it. but she doesnt seem to care about him being in the avairy with her.

she has been in the avairy with the guinea pigs for ages do you think that maybe that might have something to do with it?

thank you so much for answering my post! i hope i answered your questions okay.

Badcat..yes I see have understood the piont what Bertman has made
Kakariki are very easy to breed....once a pair become compatable.
If a compatable pair are split, then paired ith another birds, espec if it is one within sight or hearing of ech other, the chances are they will not pair up
There is also a good chance If she did breed, she would expect u to feed her and chicks also...with this in mind ..if she did breed u could loose the chicks unless u hand feed..maybe.
A pair of kakarki will breed in a small cage inside the house with a nestbox hanging off the outside...
Run a word search in the quck seath box to the left. for nestng boxes etc
And go thru some old posts re breedng
