Hi,
My hen recently layed a clutch of eggs that didnt hatch. Now, the male and female have started mating again. However, I have notcied, when im sitting by them and they decide to get it on, hehe, that Charlie, the 8 month old male, doesnt look like hes doing it correctly.
He does things like grap her head to steady himself which obviously makes her scream and run away, and i often hear them thudding to the bottom of the cage because he makes them fall off the perch. Im no expert and i havent seen that much, but i know something is not right! Im thinking that perhaps him not doing it 'correctly' is why the eggs didnt hatch.
My pair was pretty bad at mating in the beginning as well.
The hen placed herself in a corner, my poor male couldn't get to her, my male had no balance whatsoever etc.
Oh, my pair never tried to mate on a perch. Only on top of the nesting box, on the floor etc.
But in the end, they got it right. I'm no expert but I say, let them practice, it should work out sooner or later :)
How big is the perch, one vof those stupid dowel things that comes with the cage from the shop?
If so put in some desent sized natural branches they can sit on and get a grip...
Perches in our Avaires and cages are between about 30mm to 120mm in diameter...well aged and even starting to rot..gives them something to chew on.
And till they get to about a yr, they are teenagers and canbe rather clumbsy...the male may not even be shooting a live load yet. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'

Hehe, thats what I thought..he still seems like a baby to me. I don't know the age of the female but she seems rather more experienced (or perhaps thats just because she's a woman, hehe).
No, Ive put in wooden branches that i found in the woods, I dont like the idea of birds being only surrounded by artificial things.
They only ever mate in one specific place on one perch, theyre very odd, hehe. Although, they were playing upstairs in my bedroom last night and I could hear her making the funny noise she makes when she wants to mate. I think shes a little intimidating to my little Charlie, hehe.
