Posted: Tue May 17, 2005 10:31 pm Post subject: Those Latin Names!
Heres some helpful hints for those who are not proficiant with latin and techie terms...
(u techie guys just continue to post as u have been)
1/You can highlight and copy a word, then paste it in the Google search block to the left... the 'go' button is coded to open in a 2nd window so u dont loose the page your on.
2/It can also be used for spelling, thu I do highly recomend installing iespell
(copy/paste to google search block and go to the website)
3/Being an international site, we are all in different seasons. By entering almost any major town around the world, or city close by in the "Nuke Weather" block to the left, one can get the local weather forcast, updated every 2 hrs. One can get an idea of what sort of weather things are happening at other members locations.
4/The "International Time" block only use as a guide line, I cant figure out how to make it automatically update diff. daylight savings time zones.
Steps.
P.S I was wondering how long it would take for someone to notice the number of posts in "latest 5 forum posts" scrolling on the front page

Hello transoceanic friends,
in my daily work I'm using latine daily, but anyhow it is useful to know the scientific names of the birds for some reasons.
the first is that is quite comfortable to communicate with foreigns who deosn't speak English or our native language. Personally Ihad in Singapore a long conversation with a Burmanese ornithologist just telling the Linnean binomes, because we didn't had any language in common.
The same happened to Desmond Morris, when he went in Moscow zoo, to try to breed the Panda. In the night he was with the keeper of the zoo, who knew just Russian language, but they conversate all the night, telling the name of animals they had respectively in the Birtannic and in the Sovietic zoo.
Anyhow the name of Kakariki means:
Cyanoramphus form greek which is "blue" "azul" and Ramphus is the beak. Novaezelandiae doesn't need any explication.
Strange is that Latham nominated the Cyanoramphus zealandicus as such, he made a mistake, because it was from Tahiti.
Somewhere is a funny site which will made anyone to get more interested in taxonomy, here the address.

Yep thats why I posted the above ...
As said above, a latin name in a post can simply be copy pasted into the Google seach to the left and the meaning or ID of the latin name resoved in the new page, making 'catch up' for noices quick and simple. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
