Steps,

when I said that NZ had poor conservation policies, I meant poor in the sense of inadequate, I didn't mean to involve money on this one! Shame on you

But as you say... if they ask for the coop. of private breeders and other volunteers... conservation costs are affordable.
I think they can afford to house the birds a couple of weeks/months for quarantine and study, and then release.
Plus... encourage ppl to breed autoctonal species in a responsible way, and encourage the existing breeders to stay around.

Normally it's a lot cheaper to take care of things well before they get out of hand, and you have a lot more room for mistakes.

Weka birds, a private breeder hit the nail on the head..they just breed for him, heaps, then DoC walked in one day and closed him down...no explanation given or required.

hit the fan
Well... that´s quite a stupid move from DoC. Jealousy maybe?

I'm glad that there is a release! And that you got invited! Take pictures!!!
I hope they keep on making positive decisions!
By the way... tell Luis to join the forum as much as he can. His research results are of great interest.
I hope he writes something available to the public in the future.

regards / Pablo

"I have an idea..know lets just use the facts and methods that fit"

Thanks for the link Steps.... Laughing

I understand the whole PC thing.... I suppose they are doing what they think is right.... but dont have the experience of some of you long term breeders ... and having to fit in with all the red tape and work to rules must slow down the learning process too. Also they arnt just working with 1 species they must have a lot of other projects on the go as well other than just with Kakariki and you cant be expert at everything..... but i would have thought it would make sence to involve specialists in the variouse areas they are working in .... to consult an expert in a particular field for advice and to set up usable systems is the sencilble option ...unless its in Pablo's example badly managed company of course... in wich case mistakes will be made in the learning process.....and everything will take much longer to achieve....... unfortunatly an endangerd species cant afford mistakes.... or time.... Sad

try to import a bird into NZ, any bird...its been about 20 yrs since the last one..
Yet one can import cats, dogs, fish, reptiles..none of which are native to NZ.

this just doesnt make sence.... but i can see how it has come about.... but just cuz rules have been made it doesnt mean they are correct... and cant be changed..... i dont see any point in blaming anyone for what has happened already...... but as far as i can see ... the important thing now is to do what ever is possible to save them...
