i just duno ...... ive read up on here about both and i still am not sure....

when i got my 2 about a month ago Phooey looked ok and Rosemary looked quite rough.... feathers sticking out all over the place dull colour n generaly a bit mankey...... i was told she was molting so ive just been waiting.... i got some moulting tonic for the water..... but that ran out after about 2 weeks and they are now eating a fair bit of fresh fruit/veggies prob more than the seed mix as they leave most of it. Phooey looks fab..... his feathers are brighter and longer than when i got him and Rosemary has improved too...... first her breast n belly improved and her back got worse.... then her back improved and her wings got worse.... now her wings are getting better but her head n neck and going quite bald...... is this how a molt usually goes..... ??? her new feathers are really bright and almost florescent..... so i think the diet is helping but im worried about mites incase she brought some with her..... they were in with some quails in the shop i got them from and there was a lot of other birds there.

ive read about mite treatment and ordered some iverthingy... Wink and some vit/min supliment along with a seed mix that doesnt have so much of the stuff they dont like in.... Rosemary does have a few little pin feathers coming round her neck..... but she is scratching a fair bit and i noticed Phooey is scratching too... ive stood n looed as close as i can for ages n cant see anything crawling.... or any dots on the feathers.... i havent inspeted them real close ..... they still arn tame..... they seem to be scared of my hands... so i dont want to make it worse by caching them unnecessarily.........

what does anyone think............ ????

ill go try get some pics ......

Dose both birds for mites as describe by Peter in these forums, and repeat about 10 days twice.
Sever Molting yes they can look bit dull and motly, BUT THEY DO NOT GO BALD.
Wash cages, and mist spray with vinegar
Molting tonic...just keep up with a good varied consistant diet and greens, and a few cat biscuits every now and then

photo shoot didnt go tooooo well... d'oh! first no charged batteries in camera.... then Rosemary wouldnt cooperate.... you can only see how bad it is from behind when she has her head down n she kept looking at the camera signlol..... then for some reason i couldnt upload to members pics in gallery.... think it was my connection timing out or something..... anyhow.... eventually got them here.....

this is her from front colour looks much brighter in RL...

side view... her wings are grewing back a bit.... but you can see right into here ear....

and close up of back of her head... the best i could get .... when her head is down the bald patch is about 1 inch diamiter

the other thing i was wondering....... can they get fleas off dogs.....???? the dog is treated regularly .... but there may be eggs in carpet which they have been on........ but shes been looking prety manky since i got her and appart from the head she looks much better than she was....

soon as my order comes ill do the iver thing..... in the meantime will clean out n spray with viniger n do it again when ive treated them..... not quite sure how im gonna catch them without taking steps back with the taming...... but this is more important

thanks for help :) ............ my head is itching now signlol

Dont worry about it...they may be a bit upset for a few days, but a heathy birds is far easier to tame.
When u catch them do it once and quick.
I would suggest catch them in the cage, use a tea towel, this covers your hans, so there is not as much 'identfication' with them to the action.
And dont do it by yourself unles u are experianced in actually handling.
Have a 2nd person part the feathers and put the drops on.
Release quickly back to the cage and leave them be, to gather their thoughts

well i managed to catch them....just about.. and my son put the stuff on.....while they bit me Sad think they got a bit too much tho he couldnt tell if it was coming out of the dropper and i was saying make sure they got some...... now they both have what looks like a big greasy patch on the back of their necks n im a bit worrid that it might make them sick if they get it in their mouth when preening.......it does say not to ingest...!!!!

also...... i wasnt sure if i should take the bath out or not.... a bath might wash it off the feathers so they dont get poisoned.... but dont want to let them wash it off before its worked.... Think

Rosemary doesnt look to happy with me now..... Not talking

well...... its time for the second dose............ but..... i noticed yesterday that the male... Phooey...who lookes fine was trying to.. what i think looed like... pull feathers from Rosemarys head and front..... it was when he had been feeding her and i think was trying to get a bit amourus... n she was trying to take a knap on the curtain pole....n wasnt in the mood Speak to the hand i told him off.... but i have noticed he does sort of go for her sometimes beak open and threatening....

i just dont know weather to dose them again if its not mites :?: :?: and if it isnt....and he is pulling her feathers out how can i stop him..... apart from knitting her a balaclava!!... :?: :?:

If it is miyes and u dont, u have wasted your time
This alsp dose several worms
The female should be in good condition to mate
I beloeve worming /dosing for mites to close to the breeding season could also effect mating and fertilty???
Idealy, breeders/pet shops should dose for worms before selling birds
if not birds should be dosed as routine when putchased and isolated

When std pracyices are not followed issues/problems always arise
Like not servicing a car...or changing a cam belt. or checking tyre pressures...

thanks steps....ill do it today...!! i was thinking the same.... and also that it would have been dead easy for them to dose them when they caught them when i got them....and that it should be done as standard... whats a bit odd tho is that phooey looks fine all shiney n lovely and has loads of thick feathers.

i was back at the garden centre where i got them the other day and went and asked if i could have contact details for the breeder they got them off and was told they came from a wholesaler.... originally i was told they came from a breeder.....this to me is bad as i think wholesalers prob buy up cheep unwanted birds and pass them on to unsuspecting retailers.....and are probably quite stressed.... however.... they are going to try to find out where the birds came from as i want to find out about their breeding...!!!!

am now thinking maybe phooey was got rid of because he was a feather plucker and rosemary because she was..... well.... bit odd/hybrid/mankey looking..............although she is sooooo funny its unbelievable!!!!!

if id waited and gone to a breeder i could have got much better birds....... but i couldnt get rid of them now........

Hi May,

don't worry too much... it's ok, we all buy from shops/retailers in the beginning. Nobody's perfect.

Wholesalers... there are a few good ones out there. Some of them trade good quality birds. You just have to find them (i.e. be lucky to come across them or someone to tell you!)
Even I'd dare say that good breeders are few and far in between, and many of us, despite our good will, don't have good breeding stocks.

By the way... don't get rid of those lovely birds at all. Just don't let the hybrid kike breed, and get a good red fronted pair for the other one, and just breed those. (well... it's just my opinion, a humble advice)

Regards / Pablo

Well, I have noticed over the last 4 or 5 yrs...world wide, there are more quailty kakatki breeders, and better birds...AND simply because newer ppl into kakariki now have more info on how to, what birds to breed and not and how to improve those they have.
Also I think 'customers ' are getting more discerning with their choice of birds before hand.
And there is far more trading between breeders and customers behind the scines
We have 100s of members who have never posted...find what they need , often contact privately "who where can I get new birds", or contact members direct thru the membership list.

So u newer members/prospective breeders, yes there are some very good breeders who only a couple yrs ago where in the same boat as you... Mainly in Europe and Aussie, couple in Canada and the States. I know of.

Cheers
Steps

This is how my wife does it...
Aftework we have a coffee on the deck...then says something like "I want to show u something" wander out to the gardens and she picks up 4 prepared stakes, the goes over to the area.
Puts the 1st stake in, "Im thinking a 4 lettered word like "work"
puts the rest in, and says :dont u think a spa pool would go well there?"
Off caorse my reply is," we cant afford one yet" .... but to keep her happy "yes a spa would go well there"
Then it is "well I have a secret savings a/c and now have enough saved up"

Hmmm.. I knew yrs ago my wife dhould nevet have talked to my grandmother how to get things done the old fashioned way...I just got hyjacked....again!!!

So a week later there is a small enclosed spa pool room off the end of the deck....where we have coffee after work.

May, the plans in old posts, I have now gone to a different design, same size flights...same construction materials...it is now made 'kitsetted' and extra flights can be added on the end.
I have so much stuff on for now, but if I havnt posted let me know and I will right something up before u guys start.

I have been in IT for over 15 yrs now...most of it is boring crap..
I compare it to washing dishes in a resterant, and not having the varitey to dry them...
Wouldnt mind getting into gardening or landscaping, or classic car resto full time.
Trouble with IT it is either all on ...16/18 hr days or quiet washing dishes.
Couple of our children wanted to get into it...fortunatly talked them out of it.
