bisu777 asked: Has anyone bred kaks in cages of 120cm long, 50cm high and 40 cm wide? I have several such cages unused.
I have bred kakariki in cages that size and even slightly smaller. I do not know what the long term effects are of leaving them in there indefinitely, / months as I usually allow a pair to breed two or three times before moving / rotating them into a larger (2m by 3m) aviary for a couple of weeks exercise. Sometimes it takes quite a few months before the pair will breed again when moved back to their small breeding suspended aviary. Kakariki are very active and busy birds so if you use small cages, give them lots of stuff to play with.
Can u make this thread like the one I made for avairy design/build?
We in NZ have no idea what you guys oversea use or what sort of set ups you have.
This is important knowledge for (if and when) we are able to breed controlled blood lines on larger scales, for release.
Also for building large stocks of the rarer species, quickly and reliably.
We dont have the specialist experiance you breeders have overseas, with large breeding programs in cages...and I believe this is where its needed, and quite frankly, one of the main reasons the breeding programs being used are achieving the results that one would from kikes. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
It came to me as a surprise when Peter from Belgium told me that cages of such dimensions are used in Holland. Personally, I would vote against it as impairment to their activeness may lead to unwanted and desastrous consequences. I leave my pairs permanently in flights of 1.8m by 1.8m and 1m wide. However, Allen´s suggestion can be useful as my problem here is the kind that needs more breeding pairs in order to achieve my goal. Kaks here are hybridized ( red with yellow fronted ) tu such an extent that can cause a real heavy sigh! I am trying to breed them back as close as possible to pureness, to a point where the expected chicks from nestings are roughly predictable. I have already started with the building of a large community cage to retain those I consider as potencials for future breedings. I shall be posting a new subject to discuss about the types of crosses that should obtain adequate pureness.
Peter how do u setup yor nesting boxes with these breeding cages?
Inside /outside?
How big?
Cheers
Steps
The nesting boxes comes inside the breeding cages.
They are vertical , and the sizes are 35 cm high x 20 cm dept x 20 cm long.
The hole is in diameter 5.5 cm.
I do breeding with these size of breeding cages now for 4 years, the old ones were made of wood but these are made from aluminium with trespa.
They are better to clean and nearly indestructible
They are not cheap but quality has his price.(for the common 20 years )
Imagine if we could breed kakariki like that in NZ...
And DoC (NZ dept of conservation) allowed us to release approved birds into the wild.
It would not be long before kakariki would be off the endangered species list _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
