hi again.. ok first question. my hen going bald which i think is from male plucking her while mating.. she looks real bald on head.. is there a way to stop this? will it grow back?
other question is the hen laid one egg yesterday but while she was on perch. and it dropped to bottom of cage, then smashed. howcome she didnit lay in the nestbox?
It is a common problem with Kakariki's that they tend to go bald. Usually it starts on the head. In mine experience it is due to mites. They are microscopic and therefore not vissible to the eye. It is easy to treat with Ivermectin pour-on. In Belgium it is only available from a vet. Probably in the UK as well. In certain countries it is available in a petshop as a 'anti-windpipe mite' product.
When a hen drops her egg while sitting on a perch is it because she has difficulties to lay her egg. I think it is somekind of instinct. Mainly it is due to Calcium deficiency. Maybe she is a unexperienced bird and maybe it feels as somekind of inconvenience.

In my experience feather plucking can be from several reasons. I just thought I could help by suggesting one technique that they taught us which is packing their cages with fresh branches. as many as you can get in there and they concentrate on chewing instead of pulling out their mates feathers.
It gives them lots of minerals to which helps everyone. , Kathy
