Hi ya everyone my cock kak seems to be spending alot of time in the nest box alot more then the hen
He can spend hours in the box in the day with her sat on top of the box
He will sleep in the box over night some night and she will sleep outside in the aviary tucked up in the corner
She does go in the box and spend a couple hours in there but like i said it's nothing like him
Can anyony tell me why this would be please as i can't get my head around it
Thank you for your time

During the non-breeding season (Which isn't often), I can hardly keep the cocks out of there.. When the hen decides its time to breed, he stops going in there at all, and she sleeps in there

Hi Sparky,

How old is the male? I ask this because immature males tend to act as females. Once they are fully-grown, it stops.

We have observered as Peter says, but also on several occassions it didnt happen with the onset of breeding season.
It was very frustrating, althu they occassionally mated, he remained in the nest....and it was a couple critical pairs we where trying to breed.
Adding the 2nd nesting box mid breeding season we did eventually get 1 batch off one of the pairs.
Thu it is now mid winter here now the pair that is now behaving 'normal' still is, the other pair both swap between boxes as if undecided, but it does look like more 'normal' behavour now.

So tes drop another nest box in, it cant hurt to try.

Some use saw dust , others chips, some spagum moss, we use a mixture of forest mulch and chopped NZ natuve wood turnings from a local wood turner

I dont think it matters to much, so long as it is not too coarse that the hen looses the eggs dropping into/thru the meduim.

Just dont use treated wood shavings etc
