Hi all,

I was wondering what you keep in the same aviary with your breeding pairs of Kakarikis (if anything)?

I have an aviary that is half oval shape. It is 5m wide 3.6m deep and 2.5m high. The floor area is approx. 15sq/m. i believe this to be ample room for my pair of Kakarikis but the aviary looks very empty. Apart from a pair of quail what else could I put in there that my cock bird isn't going to be too threaten by. He appears to have won the heart of the hen I just purchased as she is wanting him to feed her all the time (she is approx 11months and he is only about 4).

I understand only one pair of Kakarikis per flight but could I safely add a pair of something else and if so some examples would be great.

I have always loved scaly breasted lorikeets and Scarlet Chested Grass Parrots.

Thankyou in advance.

Ben

Most of the higher parrot species do not like other birds when mating nesting
"higher parrot species" teils budgies, maybe turqs ...grass parrot types are more of the lower species and far more tollerant.

Quail, hens ginene pig, even rabbits are fine.

Are your breeders single pair per flight or are they breeding in a flock?

Do you have other species in with your breeding Kaks?

Yes we had done a lot of experimentation along these lines...older posts

No...again have done extentisive experimentation from Kings to Turqs

This in flights from 2mx 1,5nx 2mH to 3.6m to 6m x 2m h

Kakariki and most birds are fine in huge Zoo type, open tree planted walkthru avaiaies

Thankyou again Steptoe. Applause

I have done a few hours of searching through the old posts and found a few regarding "Mixed Flights". It is sad to hear of your story about the Kaks destroying the finch nests as I would like to have tried Finches.

Oh well I guess its a try and see if it works and if it doesn't then you can never have too many aviaries (flights).

Cheers
Ben

P.S I think I might try a pair of Scarlets (Neophema splendida). Anyone tried this?

Scartets, turqs burkes are all of similar nature..and very passive
We have tried with burkes and turqs...the kakariki are just too much for them.
Thu both of these we have breed in mixed flights ok

u could try by blocking the nest box from line of sight from the rest of the flight....we have to do this between breeding flights.

As you say they are all different and it may work and then again it may not. I guess all I can do is experiment and try and find a way that works for my birds. Worst case I can extend the aviary by about 8m turning it into a 13m x 3.5m x 2.5m high aviary. That should give them enough room to keep out of each others road. I hope Pray
