I am thinking about a sleeping box for the Kakariki's cage. Right now the bird's cage is square at the base, about two feet square, and about three feet tall, forming a rectangle. On the floor of the cage are his fruit dish, cereal dish, bath dish and some toys and stuff. Of course on the front of the cage is a large square door, which is open most of the time. On the side of the cage about halfway up, is a small rectangular door, about the size of a Kakariki, which hinges inwards. I'm not sure what this door is for but I was thinking if I got a box for him to play in, maybe I could attach it to the side of his cage on the OUTSIDE, with a hole in it that is the same size as this little door.
If this is a good idea, where should the "door" hole be in the box, level with the floor of the box? And should there be a perch in the box, or some bedding? And, should the box be standing on end or on its side? Or should I just put it inside the cage? I don't really want to reduce the amount of space he has in his cage with a great big box. I also hope he doesn't spend all his time in the box. Of course if he chews through the box then he will be able to get out whenever he wants so maybe the box should be wood. He seems more interested in eating, squawking and flying around than chewing things right now but I've never seen a parrot who didn't eventually find something to chew.
Make up a light weight (too heavy and it will over balce the cage) ply box about 200mm wide x 150mm x 200mm high with a hole 60 to 65 mm diam.
Screw it together, makes easy cleaning later, or so the lid drops on.
Use a couple hooks in the top so it can hang on a couple cross bars on the side of the cage
Snip a few of the bars to give him access to the hole.
Throw some wood shavings inside the box about 25/30 mm deep.

Some species are very destructive, kakariki crimsons, kings and several other are no great chewers...they test if things are edable , and some other things as potentual toys to break, but thatsa about it _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Thanks! That sounds like a great box. There's no need to snip bars because the cage came with a funny small door on one side that hinges inwards. It must be there for the addition of a nest box or something because it's too small for anything else.
