Happy New Year everyone,
After reading more on what the kakarikis can eat we gave Tiki a bone from chicken leg and he loved it, i think he almost buried his head in the hole as far as he could go, since then we have given him some gum branches with flowers on them, pork bones. He is in his element, we don't hear a peck out of him. I did buy him a Kong ball to put food into it so he has to work at it to get it out, he will eat as far as the edge of the food sticking out from it but then leaves it, I am now trying to experiment with different things to put in there to get his interest up. I have found he's not to keen on peanut butter pretty much turned his nose up at that. What I love about these birds is that they are so curious that he will give anything a try once. I have fimnally managed to get a new pic of Tiki up on my profile too, have an apple computer now and was having some trouble doing this.
tiki has also calmed down alot as well, we have been working very hard on him while we have time off work, his behaviour is getting better week by week.
your ,
it's all a matter of experimenting but also being careful when you bring in branches etc from outside that you wash them to make sure there are no chemicals that could have been sprayed on them.
Have fun
My little kaka also loves chicken bones. I give her the thickest bone from one of the wings, with a little bit of meat on it still. She loves to really peck away at the bone, getting right into it as well as eating the meat as well. She gets a bone once a week. I have also been bringing her in some Gumnut blossom and leaves, which she is enjoying and just loves it. I did read on this site, in one of the forum topics a while ago, about how kaka's seem to enjoy rubbing the oil from the leaves and/or flowers, over their wings. I was fascinated to watch my kaka do just that, for about 20 minutes, dipping her beak into the flowers and then preening her feathers, over and over. She does this everyday, with the fresh pieces I bring in for her. It is amazing how they all seem to just have the instinct to do so many things that I am learning about from this site. Wonderful little birds.

From memory that was a post by Peter in Belgium, A person who I have the greatest respect for.

Itis very pleasing to see so many people just going thru old posts, picking up a bit here and there....this is what I orginally envisaged and created this web site for...
It is a lot of work keeping and maintaining servers, and web site, even on a daily basis and 100% non commercial.
It is this practical part that realy makes it all worth while
Thankyou
