Hi, my name is Chris I am from Cornwall England, & have rescued 3 Kakarikis from an awful ending to their lives! Crying or Very sad The people that owed them were going to let them out in the night for the magpies to kill them if the staff working for them didn't wring their necks . I almost have a menagerie here and have nearly finished building my new aviary-Good job now !! as I have 15 budgies as well, plus 2 quails arriving any day. I also have a rabbit, 2 cats ,2 guinea-pigs, 9 tortoises and a pond full of fish ! Welcome to martins zoo should be on my gate . Shocked still it gives me an interest since my husband passed away. I have always had a love of birds since being give my first budgie at the age of 5yrs some 48 yrs ago d'oh! .now enough about me.
Back to the Kakarikis . they are in a rather destressed state I have taken them to the vets (1) has a bald head but otherwise seems fit, (2) is missing a toe and is showing signs of mental stress waving his/her head etc ,(3) is quiet, self-mutilating at feather cysts on antibiotics for 7days and in a cage by its self while being treated. as I have never kept these birds before I would be most grateful for any help members could give me . they are already showing signs of improvement being given lots to play with and our attention. thanks.

What can one say to ppl like that?
Read thru the Kakariki Care Section...
Diet, supply with good variety, don't worry if it takes time for them to get into fresh veggies, A Apple Cider vinegar added to the chopped veggies. A few bits of meat, chicken leg /chop bones, they will get into quickly. 3 or 4 small cat biscuits /day, each.
A slice of apple each day. "there is a lot in the old saying "Apple a Day..."
Offer for a few minutes by hand from outside, then leave for them...build a recognition between yourself and the 'treats'. And trust. Watch them when interacting, back off gently before they do , watch their body language.
Fresh water available each day to bath in..even if they don't for a few months.
Maybe keep them visible to each other if possible.
Have they been wormed? maybe best to get the vet to crop worm them if you are not familiar doing so yourself.
Fresh small branches with leaves, to rip apart....check plant varieties for toxicity 1st. Ask in forums if not sure.
Tell us about your new aviary in the "Aviaries, Flights and Cages" section.

Can you make another thread in the pet section with the last paragraph? I will then move this post there. Normally we ask before answering, the sooner you get on top of the abuse the better.
And w3c to you and your daughter to the forums. thumb
Edit:
Thanks, Info also now in Kakariki Care section
Steps.
