There is an older thread on mixing your own formula
Waste, yes that is an issue....we supply about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks to each flight...usually top up each week
The seed tray is deep and flat t stop mess and contain husks
We remove husks, and about 50% of remaining good seed, then top up.
The advantage of having several species...including grass parrots, burkes turqs, these clean up the remaining seed
Also having button quail these clean up what may remain

There is no 'perfect' mix ..each pair/bird has it personal prefences as to what it will eat....then there are variations as to the seasons...and if u just add a couple their preferences say sunflower, they are basically living on junk food.

You must keep in mind seed is just a suppliment to their diet...
Our parrots go thru about 1.5 kg seed per week to 5 to 6kg veggies (no waste) and couple kg fruit plus protein.

You could look into sprouting the left over seed.

i like the idea of sprouting the left over seed so may start doing that as i do sproutseed at the moment but i just use a hand full of the fresh stuff to do it.
the kak i have at the moment is pretty unique compared to others i have owned as she doesnt eat alot of fruit but does like her vegies especilly fresh baby spinach leaves and brocolli. Does anyone have any tips on how to get her to eat orange and apple! ive tried repeatedly but she just wont eat it! all other kaks i have had love it! THANX
