Dear colleagues,

maybe it's interesting to share here our main references for genetics and mutations.

I know most of the sites as Peter told me to visit them, and they are of great value, so I thought of putting those useful links together in 1 thread, so whenever we want to check up something we have a reference.
Most of them are not kakariki specific, but a lot of the info. can be used across species.
Note: don't forget about those many useful posts and threads that already exist in this forum!

Kakariki specific

Peter Wouters' website
http://users.skynet.be/kakariki/index.htm
Rob Van Opbergen

Non-Kakariki specific.

Genetic calculator
http://www.gencalc.com/

Articles by Clive Hesford
http://www.birdhobbyist.com/parrotcolour/

Mailing list moderated by Terry Martin
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Genetics-Psittacine/

MUTAVI mailing list (mod. by Dirk v.d. Abeele)
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/MUTAVI/
MUTAVI agapornis site (useful for standard mutation names, descriptions, etc..)
http://www.agapornis.be/
Dirk's blog (mostly agapornis but nevertheless interesting)
http://www.ornitho-genetics.info/

If I remember any other sites I'll keep on adding. Feel free to post any sites that you think are a good reference for genetics/mutations, even if it's about budgies, etc... because they can be certainly useful.

Hope this thread is interesting.

Regards / Pablo

To translate copy paste the url address into the "quick search " box in the translate part to the left The bottom box.
It opens in a new window....then in the new window at the top choose the language from to and the site will be translated for you.

When u guys put your links to your new sites in a post like this, within 24 hrs Goggle, bing and most search engines will pick up your web site and start listing it....If your web host allows seach engine bots...most free or cheap web hosts dont allow search engine bots.
Since kakariki.net is listed in the top 3 of damn near , if not all search engines, the search engines then give your websites a higher ranking faster.
I must admitt I have got behind in the site maintance, updating links etc... time...between the birds, the car collection, work grandchildren some things here have been negleted....

Hi!

A website or a blog are a bit like a lecture, 1 guy shares information about something but it's mostly a 1-way process.

The nature of a forum is that there is an open discussion going on all the time, and each individual tries to provide constructive stuff.
So I think Steps you don't need to somehow apologize if it's a bit slow on your end, that's the blessing of a forum, when it's not 1 guy, the other guy can start a thread and ask about something, inform, etc...

By the way, the scope of this thread is to have a quick reference to those links in which we can find useful info. about genetics, be it in general or in particular for kakariki. It's both for the beginner users and the more advanced users to review anything they like.

Finally... what do you guys prefer, that each one posts a reply and stays as-is, or would you like me to edit my initial post and add them so they are available there like a "directory"?

cheers / Pablo

This is a link to my website: http://parakeets285.weebly.com

There is an article on there about genetics - it is specific to crimson rosella mutations but the principles on recessive/sex-linked/dominant etc are the same for any birds.

Craig,

thanks for the link, and excellent website. And even better collection of birds. Beautiful pennants and nice flock of kakariki.

Indeed explanations are useful across different species. In this case, rosella mutations info. I think can be specially useful since it's supposed kakariki are closely related or share a common root with Platycercus species.

By the way, small off-topic but important: there are several UK-based forum members that are looking for kakariki to start breeding or swapping birds. Maybe you have some excedent youngsters from your own breeding or you could direct them to a trustable seller.

Thank you for your help!

And you have a p.m.

Regards / Pablo
