Hey people!
This Weekend i went into the Tararua Forest park and was walking/meandering/dawdling along a track when i heard the excitable familiar call of a kakariki!
High High up in the trees mainly rimu and other podocarps out of sight i guessed was a yellow crowned kakariki!
So happy to finally at least hear a wild kakariki! Applause
Of course the camera battery died so i couldnt get a video with the sound!!!

Great stuff.
Shame about not getting a tape, would have liked to put a wild kike on the web site....
Reds and yellows sound different, maybe we could have IDed from the sound.

So I wonder if this is another of the kikes "blown in from off shore Islands"
Against prevailing winds....as would be claimed from the 'powers to be'
OR from breeders who have released surplus uncertified birds, illegally, instead of doing the official legal thing, and rung their necks...

The Minister released a policy was to be completed by Sept 04 to form cooperation with private breeders....it hasn't been done.
(maybe I should publish the white wash reply I got from the Minister)
Several gallant attempts by independent breeders have also drawn up proposals....and hit a brick wall. many times over the years.

So what is the next step, get a discussion going in Parliament from the opposition benches?
Or how about have TV news or current events program film the required killing of surplus stocks by RESPONSIBLE breeders?

It has also been known, for permits to be withdrawn for "unfavourable conditions" or "modifications required " that are too expensive, and permits not renewed if ppl make waves.

The setting up of a coop with DoC is not a big task or expensive...
DoC has a great opportunty of great national and international PR, achievement in the conservation feild...but there has to be someone in DoC who is too thick to see that or even the possiblities for a big feather in their own cap as well. They cant reconise a win /win situation. yep thats thick.

And the result? well your thrill of your initial post says it all. Except Every one would have it, New Zealanders and visitors

I think it is disgusting that a relatively advanced society like New Zealand has such inane and stupid rules regarding conservation of kikes particularly in light of the fact that New Zealand has so many unique indigenous animals and plants. They should have a transparent and progresive, serious process in which to handle and involve all interested parties with the conseravtion of a species.

Conservation and eco tourism should be of huge importance to your government and they cannot use the excuse that many third world African countries use, that their people are starving and there is no money for conservation. Notwithstanding all there economic problems, many poor African countries have set aside large pieces of land and resources for conservation and education about conservation many times without the support of their people.

How can you tell people to ring an animals neck. What if your cat had kittens and you killed them, would not your SPCA have you fined or arrested? Kikes are fantastic, unique and intelligent birds, not cockroaches.

I think that doc needs to have a realistic view.
I dont think new zealand wiill ever return to how it was, thats life.
Doc should have some sort of release program going to allow us to at least return some birds to the wild, where they will never get back to themselves.

Hello from Canada Mates.

I read your posts with a mix of discust and horror. I can't believe a government would suggest such an inhumane thing. What's next? Wring the necks of our seniors because it's inconvenient to have them around. I'd love to have wild Kikes here ( altho don't think they could handle our winters )

If you think it is bad here is where u send it to to express what you think...
In the downloads
http://www.kakariki.net/download-file-6.html
Is an attempt by the Minister to make things happen, which exspired in Sept 2004.
There have been serval galant attemps by private breeders to make proposals, guidlines, and quite reasonable practical proposals...Its my understanding these have been knocked back by DoC.
I do not know if DoC carried out the policy, or at what stage anything is.

This seems to be a propetual circle than has gone on for decades, regardless of what Gov or Minister 'holds the reigns'

There is only one way to describe the situation wall wall wall wall

There is more bitching in a thread " Ring their necks"
