Hi All,
i was just wondering when you are breeding kakarikis do the parents mind if you handle the baby's in the nest or will they abandon the babies? i know with cockatiels and budgies you can handle the baby's in the nest but im not sure about kakarikis.

In most species of birds this is an old wives tail.
I think this came about when our parents when we we children telling us that so we would not climb the tress and desturb bird nests ???

Kakariki are very tollerant, there are many amazing stories in older posts on the subject..
We have removed chicks, held them upto the parants and they have feed them in our hands...others have removed chicks for several days then retrned to the nest and they carry on as if nothing has happened..chicks swapped between parents..nesting boxes, chicks and parents moved to new flights.
The thing to watch for is how tollerant the parants are to u, espec if they are 1st time parents.
What can cause parent birds to abandon is if destrubed enough and in a manner not the feel secure about the nesting box...I think its more a matter of abandoning the nest rather than the chicks.
