Interesting article.
Quote:
DOC recently released a discussion paper looking at management of native species kept in captivity, including red and yellow-crowned parakeets.

Hmmm yes the minister put the request forward back around 2004
Submissions where called for and closed about 12 months ago....

Pragmatic solutions could be deregulation with voluntary rules or continuing to require a permit with rules, DOC senior policy analyst Joanne Perry said.

"It is really difficult when a species, whether native or exotic, becomes widespread in the pet world," Ms Perry said. "It makes any sort of management hard."

No its not, there is president for how to do it at very little cost in other Government depts....MAF for instance, and the old wildlife dept back in the 60s thru to when DoC took over...and was is would be far more effieient and effective than the current mess.

Lochmara Lodge, in Queen Charlotte Sound, had a permit to hold kakariki sourced by DOC in the wild, Mr Gaze said. These birds were bred in isolation and their young were available for release into the wild.

Lochmara-bred kakariki had been released at Maungatautari mainland island in the Waikato, Mr Gaze said.

Doing so has been a huge step forward in DoC thinking, and needs to be expanded on far more, and not just for kakariki

It is great to see kakariki promoted more, and we at kakariki.net will help out and support any such efforts.
