Hello everybody, i'm a new person here because i've kakariki's now since a short while.
I've a question about the size of a breeding cage:
What size must the breeding cage minimum be?
I've got a cage about 1M Lenght 40cm D and 50 cm High, is this alright?

thanks you,
Greetings..

Hi Birdy38

w3c on board

That size sounds right to me, if you run a search for words like breeding, cage, box, etc... you'll get to some threads in which breeding facilities are discussed.

Good luck! thumb

Cheers / Pablo

Hi!

here the pro's are using breeding cages of 100-120cm long.

The minimum... the would probably breed in a shoebox! This is the same as budgies... people keep them in small sized cages, but they do enjoy space and time outside the cage. Or even humans, a lot of people survive in 1 bedroom apartments in the city but that's not really nice I think Wink

If you can't breed them in aviaries, the best option as some of the colleagues here are doing is to breed them in cages 100cm long and keep them in a holding flight with no nests during the resting periods.

Cheers / Pablo

Hi

it depends on the cage model, some people can hang it inside, others (my case) outside.

Cheers / Pablo

Hi!

your English is just fine! thumb
Here we are such kakariki freaks that with the excitement of talking about them we all make spelling/grammar mistakes!
:fun:

As I told you it depends on the model of cage. Some of the breeders here use a special built battery model that has a large door on one side of the cage so the nest can be placed inside the cage.
Some of us on the other side use stand-alone cages, canary type, and on those it's impossible to fit the nest inside, so you need to hang it from outside on one of the doors of the cage.

There are some pics in the forum with the facilities of Rob, P. Wouters and P. Wauben but I don't seem to find them right now.
Apart from reading here the forum I suggest you visit their websites for info and to buy birds:

Are you talking about a home made type cage or a wire one from the pet shop?
We had a wire budgie type cage, I chopped out a few wires and hung a box off the outside...
had to put a weigt on the top of the cage to stop it falling over. Shocked
In the afternnos let them out and they would go back at dusk...or turn the lights down slow...they raised chicks.

I was talking about a cage with is out the shop, it's a cage where you can slide a nesting blox into the cage.
But if i take a cage which is a meter long, can i slide the nestin box than into the cage?
Only if it's possible i mean.

Greetings and thank you all

Hi,

ok, now I understand Think

To be honest, I don't know, I guess then the useful space for the birds is slightly reduced to 75-80 cm, right?
Maybe one of the breeders that uses this kind of cage can give you a proper reply.

I didn't know in the NL or Belgium you could buy cages where you could slide the nest inside, I thought those were custom made, on order.
The ones I use are either "canary type" or suspended aviaries made of wire mesh, so I have to hang them outside for convenience to replace/remove the nest, inspect, etc...

Cheers / Pablo

no no no,

The cages aren't make by order, they're just on the site where you can buy other cages.
and yes indeed, that are cages where you can slide the nesting box in it.

Thanks for all your answers.
