Top one is a male...
The bottom I think is a male...sometimes the mutations to me are hard to tell because we dont have them in NZ

The wilds the female has a well defined stripe under the wing, the male a more faint/broken one
But due to the colouring of the lutino I have no idea if itis even there d'oh!

Quote:
males like to sit on eggs if fem leaves and finds another nest to lay in,

If anything happens to the female, the male usually takes over.
When chicks start getting adult feathers the female then goes to the other nest and lays sits.....the male carrys on feeding the 1st chicks till the leave the nest and he weans them off AND at the same time feeds and looks after the female sitting.

Kakariki are very social birds, till it comes to going to nest, they become terrorial, usually intimidating but occassional will attack another bird feet 1st...I have also noted the female when out of the nest is usually the most scrappy
the are not visious like love birds and red rumps...next day there are dead birds on the floor.

thanks steptoe, this answers a few of my questions, i only asked about when they leave to lay in another box because this is what has happened. i have paired up kiki(green) with a yellow because they were being chased, and the yellow laid 3 eggs in one box then proceeded to lay 4 more in onother. kiki has now gone to sit on the first 3 eggs. hence my confusion. thanks again Dianne

these birds were taken from the nest during a heat spell in dec in perth wa. there were 4. one died but two of the others are like this, i thought it was because they had gotten very hot in the nest. when i got them some of the feathers were black and looked rotten almost, and they just wiped away. he has just never grown them back. do you think it could be anything else that i should be worried about. thanks Dianne
