Hi all I am a newby to the site and to Kak's - Quite by chance have landed 3 females and a male. There is a distinct pairing between the Male (Bro) and one of the females (Ngaire).

As we are approaching breeding season I have placed a small parrot breeding box in their flight (am getting a second). I am however wondering what is the best nesting material. Do Kak's prefer Harakeke? (flax) or is any old parrot nesting fibre and feathers ok?

Cheers

Adrian

On the left there is a "quick search " block
There u can serch and read for things like
diet, hesting box, nesting material

you will have to separate out the other bird from the pair, have 2 nesting boxes...Size etc in older posts...
nesting material , we have tried everything from wood turning shavings from native timbers , dry forest floor multch to chain saw chips.
Saw dust is too fine.
Each pair tend to have their 'favourte material but will use almost anything like the above.
If breeding you will need another holding flight to keep the off spring...a lot of offspring.

Diet, breeding is all abour consistant , varied, healthy natural diet...starting at least 3 to 6 months before breeding for the next few yrs till they stop... 1 pair will produce around 30 to 40 healty adults per yr from around a 82 to 85 % of the eggs.....all yr round yr after yr
BUT requires consistant healthy diet.

Thanks Steptoe

I will seperate the other females away from the pair, hmmm feel sorry for them will have to find them some men. The birds have always been fed a diet of small parrot mix and fresh fruit and veg daily and are in excellent condition.

Will have to get some wood turnings for them.

I will also have to start to learn how to use the site properly....

Thanks

We realise most 'bird' people are not internet savy ppl.
there is a section where can ask questions, if cant find what one wants in the search functions.

The other kakariki will be fine on their own...
I have 2 pair that have produced over 120 healthy adults EACH in the last 3 yrs....
