Hi everyone, my kakariki's first and only chick from their 1st clutch is now 4 weeks old and mum has laid, upto date, 5 eggs in another nestbox. I have decided after this clutch, i would like to give mum a rest. Just wondering, what is the best way to stop breeding?
i was thinking maybe to put these chiks into a plastic/carboard bix with hole when they are a few weeks old, and then removing the nest box. Do you think this will work- i dont want to put the chicks in danger.
Any advise would be appreciated duno

Wait till just before the or just as the 1st adult pin feathers appear and remove the female well away...shewill pine etc and so will the male to a certain extent.
The male will finish raising fine.
Do not put the male and female back together.
From our and others experiance to get them start up again can take months or even over a yr, IF they start back again at all.
The male is more likely to mate up with a new female but the female will be very difficult to start up again.
It is made considerably easier if one has a comunity flight with a flock of mixed kakariki in....15+ kakariki, and let them choose partners....then both male and female tend to mate up again, but not always with each other after and extended separation.

The difference with kakariki and most other parrot species is the other species will only produce 0nce a yr, sometimes twice if the 1st eggs are taken away......kakariki just keep going.
