I dont think , from memory this has ever come up..
Generally this indicates a resperation issue, usually a lung or nasail worm mite ..along those lines , or sometimes a crop type worm that normal worming methods will not get rid of...invermectin.

I strongly advise a vet, they will run lung/nasial / crop samples and does approiately.

Or just a bit of feather stuck in a nostril which genwerally gets dislogged after a few hrs.

hi Misssophie and w3c

I have 4 kakariki and they each rub their beaks several times a day as well. To clean it, to sharpen it and to get rid of the itch when moulting on the head and in the face. Or sometimes maybe just because it feels good I think.
Some type of birds preen and clean eachother. Social habbit or just to help the other out. Kakariki do not preen eachother, so they have to find ways to get rid of hard to reach itchy or dirty parts themselves.

For this purposes I have preening toys hanging in their cage for them and a piece of manu rock laying on the bottom. But I see them rubbing against the bars of their cage or perches as well.

If he isn't doing it excessively it's just normal behavior. If it goes on for the most part of the day over a period off say a week or so... than yes, I am with Steps on having him checked by a vet.

P.s.. I've read about parrots doing it to mark their territory. Interesthing thought..
