Hi everybody from Greece,
I have a pair of kakarikis, very active and very much in love. The female had started laying eggs on the 6th of December and stopped by the end of the year (31st December). Total 15 eggs. I know, too many! Something went wrong. Finally none of them hatched and after checking them, it seemed that only two or three had been fertilized but with no results. At the end she had scattered all the eggs in the nest. She did not break them, she just quitted and started mating with the male again. Today she laid the first egg. What can I do?? Is it better to replace the good ones with the old ones until she finishes laying eggs or just let nature to do its work? She is not afraid of me. Is it ok to check the eggs during this process? I am a bit confused because it is not a common bird here in Greece and they usually advise me according to their experience with other birds, usually canaries.
Thank you in advance. Any advice will be very much appreciated.

Once the hen abandons the eggs, remove them, and replace the nesting material.
Good opportunity to clean and stertilese the nesting box to...
A good hose out and we use a LPG burner ..burns the wood, to sterilise...We screw our nesting boxes together , makes easier maintance.

Kakariki tend to be very tollerant of inspection...when they have confidence in their enviroment and the owner, so it is best to just leave them to it for the 1st couple clutches.
And it is not uncommon for the 1st or even the 2nd clutches to be unsuccessful.

It is great to learn that our native kakariki are so wide spread thru out the world.
