We kept a hen house for many yrs and noticed if the hens went into a heavy moult early we had a Wet/cold winter.
We no longer have the hens, but the Kakariki and other parrots over the last couple weeks have gone into one of the heaviest and earliest moults we have ever seen....
Do they know what sort of Winter is coming up?

I never paid attention to that but I guess that moult starts when the length of day starts to shorten. During Autumn, begin Winter they have a heavy moult on the head. That is what they do outdoors.
The pairs that I keep for breeding are indoors. I breed during Winter with HF UV light. The light goes on from 6am till 9pm. These birds never moult on the head.
This proves that moult is subject to cycles and manipulatable by length of day (amount of UV).
So, my guess is that you have had a good Summer and that the hole in the ozone layer is getting bigger lmao

I used to do that with fish, bringing roses into flower early...I have no doubt that manipulation is a reality
But still, after yrs of observation, comments my Grandfather made many yrs ago, listening to old long retired farmers, the animals/ trees know stuff we dont.
