Background
All our kakariki Red and yellow crown are wild colour stock
All are of a reasonbly wide generic base
We let the birds naturally select their mates for larger healthy birds.

Since the posts above we have had new blood stocks in for both our red and yellow crown breeding.

Quote:
I have the impression yellow f. have a shorter crown, is this right?

No...the crown can end anywhere between the vertical start of the eye to just beyond the rear of the eye, just like the red crown.

As to the yellow patch behind the eye..I used lean towards the existance or none existance of it was more a variation in the species.....as serveral generations of breeding have taken place, I now lean more to Stumblers point of veiw, the yellow patch behind the eye could be a remote indication of hybridistation, but at very low levels.

The crown and eye stripe varies greatly, even within a particular genetic line.....BUT there does seem to be a little tendency to inhert certain charactoristics, like the line and size of the stripe and the over all shape of the crown....but I would not be suprised after next yrs breeding to change my mind on that, again.

On the ear patch, going from pics above, yes the bootom edge level with the bottom of the eye, But I do notice on most of ours the stripe thickness is eith just below the top of the eye or as wide as the eye....
And the crown very often (both reds and yellows ) the crown extends well back behind the eye.

Going back to my comment above re the yellow crown spot behind the eye, I suspect....and only remotely so, that a red crown with a patch behind the eye rather than the strip, could also be a sign...remotely so, of hybridisation at some time way back in the distant past.

To me a good red crown would be one:
1/deep crimson
2/Crown either squarish or rounded in shape, with clean defined edges finishing level or beyond the rear of the eye.
3/ The stripe even in width from in front of the eye, going all the way thru the eye, level with the bottom of the eye, and the same height as the eye., parrell sides. The length behind the eye the same as the length from the top of the beak to the eye...Good well defined even edges.

A good yellow crown....
1/ No patch behind the ear ???
2/Nice even , either rounded or squarish crown finishing on or behind the rear of the eye vertical line.
Crown of a very clear bright yellow (note, young birds do not devalope this till at least 12 months + old)
3/ the red nose stipe ends level with the edge of the yellow crown or just in front of the eye.
