hi all
i discovered a lot of red mite in one of my nest boxes today ... the chicks are coming up to three weeks old ... there is no feather loss on any bird at the moment and i would like to keep it that way... im going to get some mite spray and invermicin. going to take out both nest boxes and sterilise them with fire .... gonna spray flight every where with mite spray.
the invermicin is pet grade ... will i need something stronger from a vet perhaps ???
what can i use one the chicks is there an age limit to these treatments???
any help would be . _________________ thanks brucie.....
I have not needed to use invermectin on our birds or chichs, so im not sure about the chicks
If they have adult feathers a drop on the neck should be ok, repeat 10 to 12 days ..a 3rd to make surw.
Wash down, flame heat id good espec when can dismantle nesting boxes because they are screwed together.
Damp down evwerything with 50/40 water vinegar and repeat along with invermectin. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
I read about someone who put the nestingbox in the microwave to kill the mites.
And I know of people that put strings of tobacco in the box to prevent the nesting box from getting infected.
Not tobacco, toxic....espec when one considers their body weight to ours and dosage...
ppl used to use it for spraying veggies, eventually got banned because of high residual toxins still in the veggie at the table.
The microwave will work. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
Which is the advantage of having a lot of us, all with varing degrees of experiance to share...I would never had know if many yrs ago finding the so called 'natural' remidies in the veggie garden where useless....garlic sprays and stuff...and came across historicaly tobacco as an effective soln....but toxic. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
i gave the chicks the treatment and so far they are fine .... it says on the instructions to go by weight ... no less than 50g and the chicks were 70g.
it didn't say anything about age on the instructions so i guess there isn't an issue.
it's been two days since i treated box, flight, and birds and all seems fine ... im going to re-apply treatment in a week and then once more for good measure a couple of week later. i used invermectin for medium sized birds by beaphur and a aerosol spray for mite made by johnsons .... i also bought some johnsons mite spray which came in a vaporiser bottle and this was much more effective than the aerosol.
gonna be more vigilant with the vinegar/water solution now as prevention is cheaper than the treatment i've just had to buy. _________________ thanks brucie.....
the vinegar is not only a preventive, it is also a treatment.
I do have a therory, that mites in capitivity are prevasleint because birds are not any fed anilmal fats.....it is these fats the birds use to prune with, along with plant oils, natural cures and prweventives
