Just posting my good news......vegas has laid an egg!!!

This is her second egg, the first last week got squashed!?!

I was worried with her only being about 5/6 months old, but she laid both with no bother at all.

Just need to wait and see what happens...of course i've been reading the forum and have gained alot of reassurance Applause

haha.....i was saying to my husband today that sometimes i don't know where to look.

I'm really pleased i tried to leave it as long as possible to allow Vegas to get used to a good diet but she laid in the bottom of the cage last week, so hubby built an emergency nest box and we have a new egg.

She's sitting on it right away too, which i thought was uncommon until they had about 3-4 eggs.

I really dont have 2 pair that do the same thing, let alone a pair that repeat the same thing t
each time..even consectavly.
I have a pair who lays in a very short tiome goes sits and within 24 hrs all the chicks are out....this time I have she laid even when sitting, chicks had full down, eyes opened when the last couple where hatching Shocked I realy didnt think these iittle blobs of skin had a chance.
Well 4 came out 2 days ago, 2 are about 3 days off ready to leave, and a couple still have no ccolour in the crown, and pin feathers...
AND the hen is already hatching in the 2nd box. d'oh!
They have been doing this solid for over 3 yrs now...without a break.

Dont consider that if something is out of the norm something is wrong or u are doing anything adverse...if they are in good health, happy...just let them and nature do their thing and take great pleasure from simply supporting them their needs and observing.
We can learn so much with our own children from the commitment these birds give to each other and their families.

Thanks for the replies, i've not been able to get on the site, my router is playing up and no matter what i say to my provider, they just don't get it!!!!! wall

Anyway.....on my last update here we had an egg, we now have 5.....we hardly see Vegas now she comes out, eats, drinks, socialises for about 5 mins then straight back into the nest box.

I've been reading up on candling, i just wanted to ask...i'm a bit worried about handling the eggs for candling, i had decided to wait until Vegas comes out then 'go for it' as quickl as possible!!! is this the best way? I'm a bit apprehensive incase she gets worried about her eggs.

Thanks

Nicola

to be honest iv'e stopped doing it ... it spoils the surprise like peeking at you pressies or asking the sex of your child signlol
but if u can't wait <v> like me the first time yes wait till she comes out be as gentle and calm as poss the littlest pressure from your fingers and smash egg gone... i block the hole so she cant go bk till i'm done.

you see, i am of quite the same opinion, it's not really as though its something that needs to be done but i am quite curious purely because this is my first time.

I'll get it done next time she comes out and let you kknow how i got on.

Thanks

Candling is great for mass producing eggs....sorting them .
As far as doig it for normal breeding, like u I dont see the point.
You are always going to get a couple or 3 infertile...my hot bottle therory.
One either gets a great suprise as the start to hatch, or a bit of a disapointment on rare occassions with say 2 chicks out of 7 or 8 eggs.

It doesnt hurt to candle....one day u may need to do it, and you will then know how to and what to look for.
Those LED torches are very good.

So sorry everyone, my router has been really playing up, i've just realised you have replied.

Yeah Steptoe, i see exactly where your coming from, and i will eventually candle the eggs one day.

One of the other reasons i haven't is purely as i do not want to disturb the eggs, it is their first time and i have been anxious as Vegas is quite young so i thought i would let nature take it's course what will be will be.

May - thanks for your support....no hatchlings as yet but it should be imminent Applause

i now have two chicks, another hatched on tuesday.

So far everything is going good, there are still 2 eggs, one is infertile and the other looks to be fertile Pray
(i eventually candled them, don't know what i was anxious about)

I check on them whenever i can, i can't quite believe how quick they are in moving around the nest box...amazing. Mum and Dad are allowing me to check without any problems.

To be honest i can't contain my excitement, this has so far proven to be very rewarding
