Hello to you all!

After weeks of going almost every day to the pet store just to watch their only kakariki, I finally decided to buy him. I have a cockateil who has been living alone almost all of his life. He is a lot of trouble, he wakes up at 5am and starts "singing" and won't stop until 10am or so! So yes, I wanted to adopt a different kind of bird, something quieter. The kakariki seemed the perfect choice, and the owner of the pet store told me that he had only bought the one, so he had also been alone for a long time ( also, the owner supposedly hand-feed him, but the kakariki does not allow me to touch, hold or even feed him)

After reading on this forum that cockateils and kakarikis can live together with no problem, and given that the cage is quite big, I finally bought the kakariki, who I named "Lighting".

Now, perhaps I am panicking too soon, but from the start the kakariki has been too quiet and withdrawn, sitting in one side of the highest branch of the cage, and no matter how much my cockateil has been singing at him, he has not moved or made any sound. I don't think he has even been down to drink water!! I tried to give him fruit but he refuses to move or come near me. Does anybody know if this means my cockateil and the kakariki do not get along at all? Or is it just that he's having problems adapting?

Hola!

I will reply here in English so that everyone else can understand, but I'm in fact Spanish (from Vigo), where are you from?

Welcome to the community!!!

About your kakariki... maybe he's sick or just stressed about the new place/enviroment. But nevertheless it's not a good idea to introduce a new bird in the space of your other pets, quarantine is highly recommended.

Anyway, it's quite strange that a kakariki stays so static/shy, as many times after I or other colleagues have released a new bird, they just take a couple of minutes to investigate the cage, eat, and of course take a bath in the water bowl.

I have cockatiels and kakariki mixed myself, and it's very funny how they interact sometimes, I'm sure you'll have a laugh with them.

Saludos / Pablo
