Hi there I'm Jim from The u.k.

I have just started keeping kakariki's in the last year

One started with one pair then brought a few more then ended up with 8 pairs which three of them are on eggs

I was told to join up by one of my friends because I was interested in going into hand taming one of the young and also help and assistance if any of my birds god forbid became I'll

I will post some photo's up in due course.

Nice to know a website with all info on the birds is on the internet

On the left is a "quick Search " block type in things like
taming diet
Some ppl hand raise to tame, we raise then tame down, less work, get a bird that doesnt get pscologically depndant... eliminates most feather plucking of tame birds....and with good consistant balanced diet supplied to parents, bigger healthier birds.....
And we do so issues with breeding birds that for a couple generations have been hand raised...they dont look after or feed chicks in many cases.

I'm only going to try hand tame two of my 11 babies just out of interest and to see how hard it is and to understand the birds a little more would you think this to be the best way ?

Yep.. get a chair, a book, a cup of coffee and an apple , bit of mint, put them in the avairy.
Sit on the chair, read the book, drink the coffee, and the apple and mint on the chair arm for the kakariki to come down and get used to u.

Chances are they will undo your shoe laces before the apple and mint.
That is how "hard" it is to do.

From the link refered to above
Quote:
We host our pics on this server so there is no need to use photobucket When reply to a thread or starting a new thread such as this, below u will see "Add an Attachment"
Use the browse button as to where u have the pic on your computer
The click the "Add an Attachment" button
The sever sometimes has truoble loading very large pics, as it has a inbuilt editor that resizes them and creates thumb nails.
1/Crop the pic on your machine to remove unwanted background, and bring the sublect to the foreground
2/Resize the longest side to about 600 pixels
3/save as / choose jpg/ change name to what u want./ U will see see an options button, set this about 20% / save

There are good free pic editors downloadable on the net... irfran is one
http://www.download.com/3001-2192_4-10387524.html

Its better than MS paint

Steps

yeah these fellas love to mess with my shoes and my shoelaces
I have to be careful when I enter the aviary because if I stand for half a minute while watching something they are all over my feet, one day IŽll step on one of them accidentally
