I don't mean to be rude and I don't know if it's due to the digital quality of the pics or they are moulting but some of them don't look in good feather condition.
Joey's is a bit out of focus. Fred + Sammy are molting. Sunny is just recovering from an infection and is getting her feathers back. Most of the pictures were ok but after resizing etc i forgot to sharpen up the pics.
Note the difference in the crown of Sammy and Joey
Sammy is definately a hybrid yellow/ Red crown cross.
And joey has a clean pale yellow crown near to correct colour.
I say near..we have recused many ytellow and red kakariki, espec yellow crown this is noticable, get then on a full regular balanced diet over 4 to 6 months and the "pale" goes out of the crown becoming a very nice shade of yellow.
Dad and AJ both show signs of hybridisation several denerations back. keep in mind its near imposssible to source pure breed kakariki....
At a guess, by breeding back, you could have acceptable "pure " stock in 2 to 4 (max) generations
When u look at Dads crown...see down beside the beak ..the clear definition between the green and red...it should be like that all around the crown border
The camera, my screen could be a bit off...but the red in the crown looks very pale...either diet or hybridisation....red crowns have a darker red often almost crimson.
At a geuss and from many yrs of experimenting experiance, I would say they lack protein, iron and acidic conditions...Vit C and vinegar.

Steps I believe the poor/pale coloring, bad feather condition, etc... that most European breeders have is due to poor breeding and keeping practices by random breeders.
These breeders will usually walk to their nearest wholesaler and swap the chicks for a bag of seed or a bit of money.
Then these wholesalers sell them to random importers in other countries in batches of 50-100-200.
So the situation for most of us in countries other than Belgium, Netherlands or Germany is that you must go and look around the wholesalers to see if you can find a random bird that is in good condition.
Compared to other species, specialized kakariki breeders are few and far in between.
About feather condition... I guess it takes all of us a while to overcome the shock of feeding the birds meat, bones, seafood, garden herbs, etc...
I think most of us got used to see parakeets and parrots being fed exclusively plain seed, so it takes a while to shut up our inconcious mind.
Then also the birds usually take up some time to really get in top condition.
I think that's probably a small advantage you have, maybe your birds are quite a few generations less away from wild pure specimens of excelent quality.
Thanks for the info Steptoe. I hope i give my Kakis the right food and a balanced diet. I give them a seed mixture ( small parakeet mix), dandilion leaves and flowers, brocklie ( excuse spelling), tomatoes, apple, grapes, oranges, cabbage, corn on the cob, fresh peppers, and once a week dried chillies, and chicken bones. They have potted basil, parsley and chives in the avairy aswell as cuttle fish and oyster shells. I also save any old seed and mix it with water to sprout and they have that also. The only thing i dont give them is vinegar, which type is best and do i mix it with their seed.

From experiance takes about 6 to 6 months of good diet to bring a kakariki into good condition.
Good condition is a floresnce and depth of colour of the feathers including the crown and size health of chicks.
I recieved an email a while back from one of the Euro breeders who took up, experimsnts with the diet /vinegar/apple cider, and he comment the difference wa quite astonding.
Note ..we dont just feed the kakariki the diet...the kings, crimsons, burkes, turqs cockteils all get the same. _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'

the older one is not far from jumping out of the nest hehe, they are sooooo cute when they just leave the nest.
