i think im lucky Petal doesnt mind me handling the chicks ... she just nips out of the nest box n stuffs her face while i baby sit. Ive heard some hens dont like the rings and can try to get them off the babies but she has never been at all bothered _________________ May........
I had a few problems with the baby but all sorted now. Bruce doesnt really eat much else but seed and the eggfood at the moment and i noticed fluffy was getting a bit constipated and also going bald.... petal i think was starting to pluck him ......which she has done before to encourage the chicks to leave the nest box...but before its been later than 4 weeks after hatching. usually id move the chicks to a budgie box and dad would continue to feed them..... however .... Bruce wasnt feeding fluffy (now Baldric) and having no siblings to snuggle up to and not much fluf left was getting cold......... so...... hes now in the house and im hand feeding him.... his feathers are begining to grow again and hes pooing everywhere and doing well.... i have decided to train him to wear a flight harness as he is getting really used to being handled already after only a few day. _________________ May........
sometimes lone chicks have a hard time, as you say the lack of heat and snuggling of brothers make a difference.
And it didn't happen me before with kakariki, but this season I had to hand-feed 2 cockatiels that had already jumped out the nest. The parents stopped feeding them and they weren't smart enough to fend for themselves. The most curious thing is that one of them neither cried for food.
A kike with a flight harness could be an amusing thing to watch. Send pics/vids! :)
Keep us updated on the progress of the chick! :) _________________ AD ASTRA PER ASPERA
I have got a petite size Aviator flight harness and have watched the DVD that came with it and already started getting him/her used to it and doing the training they advise..... i will take a load of pics as we progress n might even be able to get a vidio ....i only have vid on my phone so not sure of the quality... I have also started ..."poop" training too and to my surprise in the last day he has pooped on comand 4 times....... but also pooped on me a whole lot more but im being positive
as for mum n dad....... Petal layed another egg this am 1st of her second clutch with Bruce...... and Big n Gilbert now have 3 in their second clutch......none of their first clutch hatched so im hoping they manage to hatch some this time as im a bit worried Gilbert might not be fertile....think he would make a real good dad.... as hes been a good "weaning uncle" to other babies ive had. _________________ May........

We have often had kakariki jump out early..had one the other day, which a couple button quail had plucked its down feathers (no broken skin thu)
Just drop back up into the nest box. The dad was feeding it fine on the floor.
One can put a chick back in any kakariki nest box...with a different pair, they will still look after it as their own nps.
Might try taking a burke chick and put in with kakariki chicks one day, see what happens _________________ My Spelling is Not Incorrect...It's 'Creative'
I have placed a cockatiel egg on a kakariki nest. They are rearing it superbly. Now... I'm very intrigued how that cockatiel will behave after jumping out the nest.
I have also tried placing 2 kakariki chicks in another kakariki's nest and they didn't feed them. I don't know the reason why. They made enough noise as to trigger response but nothing. I think the adults didn't even enter the nest. I will try again in the following days when the chicks are older.
